I’ve been cooped up in my home throughout the cold winter months. Battling seasonal depression and the gray skies, I’ve been patiently waiting for the chance to leave my home and, yes, touch grass. As I’m celebrating the longer days and the warmer weather, I’ve found myself using the Kindle Paperweight as a companion during my afternoons out. Whether I’m sitting on my patio or spending an hour at a coffee shop, the Kindle Paperweight has stuck with me.
I have an on-again-off-again relationship with reading traditional print. In the era of digital, I’ve found it difficult to continually bring a physical novel with me. To avoid storing it in a bag and ensuring it doesn’t get damaged, I tend to avoid packing a book with me when I leave my home. However, a part of me is saddened by this. There’s no substitute for a paperbound read — but the Kindle Paperwhite is exceptionally close. Lacking the tactile sense of flipping through pages, the Kindle Paperwhite can offer great features as a digital alternative. I’ve been using the device more over the past couple of weeks. As a result of some great quality-of-life benefits, the Kindle Paperwhite is a phenomenal e-reader for the spring, leading into the summer.

The iPad wants to replace your Kindle e-reader – but should it?
The answer is going to depend on how and what you want to read, not to mention your budget.
1 The Kindle Paperwhite features impressive battery life
Amazon’s latest Kindle Paperwhite sports enough battery life to get you through the spring months
The trade-offs of reading a physical book versus digital comes down to the device’s limitations. For instance, a key concern is how much mileage an e-reader gets. Factoring in the convenience, at no point does it sound appealing if you’re consistently worrying about battery life. Thankfully, the Kindle Paperwhite sports phenomenal battery life. Compared to the base model’s average of six weeks of use, the 2024 Kindle Paperweight model doubles that, bringing it to up to 12 weeks.
Ultimately, this will depend on daily usage, screen brightness, etc. However, for an average person, this is more than enough to read a couple of chapters a day while at a park. Speaking for myself, I’ve been using the Kindle Paperwhite for a few hours per day, and in the short two weeks of use, I’ve barely depleted 15 percent of the total battery life. So, unless you plan on binge-reading through the A Court of Thorns and Roses series in a week, you’ll likely get a lot of mileage from a single charge.
2 The adaptive display compensates for any lighting
Whether it’s a sunny, clear day or you’re hit with overcast, the display is clear
With the Kindle Paperwhite’s battery being a non-issue for longevity, there’s no inherent worry about screen brightness. This comes in handy quite a lot since Amazon’s e-reader features an adaptive display of up to 94 nits. There’s no need to manually adjust the brightness if you’re reading while the sun is out and shining and the clouds roll in. This is also a great perk if you’re reading in a coffee shop with low-light. The Kindle Paperwhite can manually adjust its brightness based on your conditions.
With a 7-inch glare-free display, the e-reader can truly operate under the brightest conditions. Even in direct sunlight, it’s as if I was reading off the pages of an actual book. There are also warmth settings that can be used to reduce eye strain in darker environments. This has been a major benefit when reading sessions continue back home before bed.

3 The Kindle Paperwhite is lightweight and easy to carry
With such a small footprint and a modest weight, the Kindle is easier to pack than a traditional book
I often don’t leave my home with a ton to carry — maybe just a backpack in some cases. So, it’s important that I can bring my Kindle Paperwhite with me effortlessly. If I intend to read outside or while grabbing my daily oat milk latte, I might stash it away in a sleeve in my bag. Measuring in at 7 x 5 x 0.3-inches and weighing 7.4oz, the Kindle Paperwhite is easy to stow away and feels great in my hands while reading.
The Kindle Paperwhite is small enough that I can hold it comfortably with one hand. That means if I’m siping away on my coffee or a bottle of water, I can continue tabbing through pages with ease. With the ability to progress through pages by tapping at the bottom of the screen, advancing through a chapter is painless.
4 Build your Kindle library with Prime’s services
Whether it’s Kindle Unlimited or Amazon First Reads, you can gain access to many titles
Kindle’s platform lets you purchase digital copies of books, comics, etc. However, if you want to grow your Kindle library even more, you can sign up and use a couple of Amazon’s services. The first one, which is likely more well-known, is Kindle Unlimited. Similar to a Netflix-style service, you can sign up for $11.99 per month and access an unlimited amount of digital content each month. Kindle Unlimited offers millions of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and more. With this service, you can try a book without committing or acquire a virtual copy of a book you already own without repurchasing outright.
Typically, Prime members can select one of 10 ebooks, many spanning different genres. If you’re already a Prime member, there’s little reason not to take advantage of this and have a little extra to read each month this spring.
Amazon First Reads is another essential service to try this spring. Available to all Prime members, you can unlock a Kindle book and a bonus “short read” for free each month. Each month, First Reads circulates a selection of “Editors Picks” to shop from. Typically, Prime members can select one of 10 ebooks spanning many different genres. If you’re already a Prime member, there’s little reason not to take advantage of this and have a little extra to read each month this spring.

5 Water resistance for a safer lakeside reading and unexpected rainfall
Kindle Paperwhite has an IPX8 rating
Whatever your spring plans are this season, the Kindle Paperwhite can be a safe and reliable companion. I’ve already covered how great it is to use it in a park or coffee shop. However, as the weather continues to get warmer and your plans start incorporating a pool or lakefront, this e-reader won’t let you down. On top of this, the Kindle Paperwhite’s water resistance can also protect it from unexpected rainfall. Nothing is worse than some showers rolling in during a nice outing. Unlike a traditional book, you won’t have to worry about damaged pages or a weather-worn cover with the Kindle Paperwhite.
I certainly don’t ever recommend bringing the Kindle Paperwhite underwater with you. However, if you’re next to a pool or on a dock by a lake, don’t fret if a little water gets on the device. Amazon has developed the Kindle Paperwhite with an IPX8 rating. So, if the unfortunate does happen, the e-reader can withstand being in up to two meters of fresh water for around 60 minutes.
