Asus Unveils 2025 XG Mobile: World’s First Thunderbolt 5 eGPU

During CES 2025 Asus has introduced the world’s first Thunderbolt 5 external graphics card (eGPU) and docking station, the 2025 XG Mobile. This compact device offers a powerful single-cable solution for laptops and handhelds, combining Nvidia’s high-performance GeForce RTX 5090 mobile GPU, 140W power delivery, multi-monitor support, and a versatile hub with USB, SD card, and 5Gbps Ethernet connectivity.

Leveraging Thunderbolt 5’s 80Gbps bidirectional bandwidth, the XG Mobile provides up to 64Gbps for its GPU, enabling impressive performance. Unlike its proprietary predecessor, which was limited to certain Asus devices, this new model is compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 systems, though Thunderbolt 5 is recommended for optimal GPU bandwidth.

Weighing under 2.2 pounds and featuring a fold-out kickstand, the XG Mobile is 25% lighter and 18% smaller than its predecessor. It integrates a 350W internal power supply, eliminating the need for an external power brick. The device also includes HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 for video output and two 10Gbps USB-A ports.

Pricing for the XG Mobile reflects its portability and performance. The top-tier model with an RTX 5090 mobile GPU will cost $2,199.99, while a lower-tier version featuring an RTX 5070 Ti will be priced at $1,199.99. While these prices are higher than traditional desktop eGPU solutions, the XG Mobile targets users seeking compact, travel-friendly power rather than maximum cost efficiency.

Set to launch in Q1 2025, the XG Mobile represents a cutting-edge option for thin-and-light laptops and handhelds, potentially enabling them to double as high-performance desktops. However, finding compatible Thunderbolt 5 devices without built-in discrete GPUs may be a challenge.
